The Department of the Holy Scripture of the Old Testament is a scientific-teaching unit with a number of specialised biblical areas that cover canonical and deuterocanonical Old Testament writings. The main goal of the Department is twofold: on the one hand – to develop scientific research of the Old Testament biblical message through diachronic and synchronic hermeneutic approach by using historical-critical (and other) methods; on the other hand – to transmit results of research in this area to students on all levels of study and in all constituents of the Faculty. Students are introduced, firstly, into basic themes and issues related to the genesis of the Scripture, its inspirations, creation of the canon, and possibilities and ways of scientific study of biblical writings. Through special introductions into individual biblical writings, knowledge on the writer, time and manner of emergence of an individual writing, its literary structure, and its theological message is transmitted. Through exegetical interpretation of individual selected biblical texts by means of contemporary methods, students are introduced into ways of correct interpretation of biblical texts. The attention is directed to theological contents by a recourse to biblical theology that deals synthetically with the most important anthropological and theological themes. Studying biblical languages – Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek – makes serious philological study of texts and their better understanding possible.

Obvezatni predmeti:

1. Opći uvod u Sveto pismo (temeljna pitanja s kojima se student susreće proučavajući Sveto pismo: pojam Pisma, nadahnuće, kanon, tumačenje Biblije, znanstveno istraživanje Biblije);
2. Uvod i egzegeza SZ I: Petoknjižje i prednji proroci. Uvod u pojedine biblijske knjige od Knjige Postanka do Druge knjige Kraljeva, te egzegeza izabranih biblijskih tekstova;
3. Uvod i egzegeza SZ II: Proroci. Uvod u knjige četiriju velikih (Izaija, Jeremija, Ezekiel i Daniel) i dvanaest malih proroka (od Amosa do Malahije), te egzegeza pojedinih izabranih proročkih tekstova.
4. Uvod i egzegeza SZ III: Kasni i mudrosni spisi. Uvod u kroničarsko djelo (Knjige Ljetopisa, Ezra i Nehemija) i u pojedine mudrosne knjige (Tobija, Judita, Estera; Job, Psalmi, Izreke, Propovjednik, Pjesma nad pjesmama, Knjiga Mudrosti i Sirah), te egzegeza izabranih mudrosnih tekstova.
5. Biblijska teologija Staroga zavjeta. Sinteza biblijskog nauka sadržanog u knjigama Starog zavjeta (o Bogu, čovjeku, svijetu, o odnosu Boga i čovjeka, o biblijskoj antropologiji, o eshatologiji i mesijanizmu).
6. Hebrejski jezik I. Proučavaju se osnovni elementi gramatike i sintakse te vježbanje čitanja i prijevoda lakših hebrejskih tekstova.
