Fundamental goals of the scientific-teaching and scientific-research work of the Department are: to deepen knowledge of the ecumenical movement and to work on building sisterly relations among Christian churches, to deepen the common faith in Jesus Christ, to practice looking at others from the perspective of Christ’s wish for Christians to be a sign of the Kingdom of God, to get familiarised with differences in the interpretation of Christian divisions by individual Christian Churches and to become aware of consequences of these divergent interpretations for how the history of the Church is presented, to recognise possibilities of ecumenical cooperation in terms of the proclamation of Christ in the contemporary world, to get familiarised with examples of promoting the spirit and culture of ecumenism, and to get familiarised with most important achievements of ecumenism on the journey to the communion of Christian Churches. The approach is developed against the background of fear of “modern relativizing” that is often present and, hence, prompts the need to point out doctrinal legitimacy or, even beyond that, total alignment and appropriateness of contemporary theological discourse on unity in diversity with the original Christian identity and the “traditional orthodoxy”. In this way, a priori reservation and distrustfulness towards serious new theological-ecclesiological reflections and concepts of the unity of churches, based on the principles of unity in diversity, is gradually and argumentatively dissolved.
