The tradition of canon law science and education – in the ecclesial and civil area – has been present among Croatians since the middle ages. This can be demonstrated on the basis of statues of some cities, provinces, and of philosophical-theological cathedral schools, studies, public education, etc. In our context today, canon law science and education are mainly linked to theological faculties and theologies. The Department of Canon Law existed within the theological study in Croatia even before the University of Zagreb was founded (1874). The Department gained in importance especially within the frame of modern University, which had the Catholic Faculty of Theology from the beginning. The Department of Canon Law at the Catholic Faculty of Theology was, and still is, one of the main scientific-teaching units, consisting of subjects in canon law and scientific disciplines related to it. Titles of individual courses in canon law, as well as their contents, have changed over the course of history in order to meet better the needs of the Church and society in which it operates.
