Dogmatic theology reflects on contents of faith of the Church. It avoids authoritarian prepotency and, instead, teaches about the final Divine decision for the human being and the human response of faith on that decision. These responses have been expressed in the Magisterial definitions of faith. Accordingly, there is no dogmatics without faith that is lived and this is where dogmatics differs from any analysis of the Christian faith, offered by some sciences on religion. This, however, does not mean that dogmatics is not a science; on the contrary. It is a science because, among other things, it demonstrates and grounds rationality and justification of some decisions, i.e. some contents of faith. The main task of dogmatic theology consists in the integral presentation of the Christian faith on the basis of scientific criteria and methodological demands that are appropriate for theological research. The goal of dogmatic theology is to increase, as far as possible, the certainty of the discourse on God and on mysteries and realities of faith. The research that goes on in dogmatic theology usually consists of two main parts, “positive” and “systematic” (speculative). The “positive” part consists of biblical, patristic, and historical-dogmatic overview of a certain theme, while the speculative part follows a kind of “architectonic principle” by analysing central truths of the Christian faith as those truths from which all other truth claims proceed. In accordance with the hermeneutical principle, as a means taken over from philosophy or from culture in general, dogmatic theology then proceeds with an attempt to explain the Christian faith in a language that is understandable to the contemporary human being.
