to the Licentiate and Doctoral Study Programme of Theology
in the academic year 2021-22,
in the scientific area of humanistic sciences, field of theology

 

The Doctoral Study of Theology at the Catholic Faculty of Theology, University of Zagreb, lasts 6 semesters (180 ECTS credits). Upon completion of the studies, students acquire the academic degree of Doctor of Humanistic Sciences, Field of Theology. The Licentiate Study of Theology at the Catholic Faculty of Theology, University of Zagreb, lasts 4 semesters (120 ECTS credits). Upon completion of the study, students acquire the academic degree of Licentiate of Theology, in the canonical (ecclesiastic) area.

 

Students enrol in one of the offered modules:

  • Contemporary Perspectives of the Relation between Philosophy and Theology
  • Conciliar Research and the Renewal of the Church
  • Systematic Theology Facing the Signs of the Times
  • Ethical-Moral and Social Relevancy of Theology and the Church
  • Ecumenical and Interreligious Dialogue
  • Contemporary Pastoral Challenges between Theory and Practice
  • The Church and Theology throughout History

Tuition: Postgraduate students pay tuition. The tuition fee for one year of study is HRK 15,000.00

Classes: Classes begin in October (winter semester) and in March (summer semester), in the form of six (6) study meetings per semester and in part remotely.

Enrolment conditions: Enrolment is possible for candidates who have completed the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate Philosophical-theological Study Programme or the Integrated Undergraduate and Graduate Study Programme of Religious Pedagogy and Catechetics, the Graduate Theological-Catechetic Study Programme, the Graduate Religious Pedagogy and Catechetics Study Programme or the Graduate Study Programme of Theological-religious science. The enrolment is also open to candidates who completed the Licentiate (lic. theol.) or the Master of Science in Theology (M. Sc.)

Admission requirements for candidates wishing to achieve an academic (canonical) degree of Licentiate (4 semesters / 120 ECTS credits):

  1. grade point average of at least 3.5;
  2. proof of knowledge of a foreign language (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish);
  3. proof of knowledge of Latin and (biblical) Greek;
  4. written opinion of the professor with whom the candidate has written his or her diploma thesis;
  5. proposal on the area / topic of the research – the Proposal Project (the form needs to be downloaded from the Faculty’s website, here);
  6. proof of obligations completed during the Preparatory Year (for candidates who hold a degree in Religious Pedagogy and Catechetics, Theological-Catechetical Studies, Studies in Religious Pedagogy and Catechetics or Theological-Religious Sciences).

 

Admission requirements for candidates wishing to achieve an academic doctoral degree (6 semesters / 180 ECTS credits):

  1. grade point average of at least 3.5;
  2. proof of knowledge of two foreign languages (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish; no later than enrolment in the 5th semester, doctoral students must submit a certificate of knowledge of the second foreign language at the CEFR B1 level);
  3. proof of knowledge of Latin and (biblical) Greek;
  4. written opinion of the professor with whom the candidate has written his or her diploma thesis;
  5. written opinion of the professor with whom the candidate wrote a seminar paper (cannot be the same professor with whom the diploma thesis was written);
  6. proposal on the area / topic of the research – the Proposal Project (the form needs to be downloaded from the Faculty’s website, here);
  7. proof of obligations completed during the Preparatory Year (for candidates who hold a degree in Religious Pedagogy and Catechetics, Theological-Catechetical Studies, Studies in Religious Pedagogy and Catechetics or Theological-Religious Sciences).

 

Admission requirements for candidates wishing to enrol in the third year of the doctoral study, who already hold academic degrees of Master of Theological Sciences, or Licentiate of Theology (2 semesters / 60 ECTS):

  1. grade point average of at least 4.0;
  2. proof of knowledge of two foreign languages on the CEFR B1 level (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish);
  3. Master’s / Licentiate thesis evaluated with the minimal mark of 4 (very good);
  4. title and description of the doctoral thesis topic (the form needs to be downloaded from the Faculty’s website, here);
  5. consent and opinion of a possible mentor (the form needs to be downloaded from the Faculty’s website, here).

 

Requirements for the admission to the preparatory year for candidates holding a diploma of the integrated undergraduate and graduate study programme of Religious Pedagogy and Catechetics, graduate Theological-Catechetical Studies, graduate study programme of Religious Pedagogy and Catechetics or Theological-Religious Sciences:

  1. grade point average of at least 3.5;
  2. written opinion of the professor with whom the candidate has written his or her diploma thesis.

 

In order to enrol in the Licentiate and Doctoral Study Programme of Theology, students who have completed their studies outside the Republic of Croatia need to enclose a Decision on the recognition of a foreign diploma, issued by the University of Zagreb’s commission for the academic recognition of foreign higher education qualifications.

Admissions open on August 16, 2021, and last for 30 days.

All necessary documents need to be submitted in the form of the original or a certified copy.

All applicants undergo a consultation interview. Individual consultation interviews with candidates are conducted at the Catholic Faculty of Theology. Applicants will be notified of the date and time of the consultation interview in a timely manner via the Faculty’s website and by e-mail.
